Thank you for joining us for our 12/6 Learn at Lunch webinar “Martin v Boise: Challenging Laws that Criminalize Homelessness”. You can find a recording of the webinar and the slides here.

A special thank you to Tristia Bauman, Senior Attorney at the National Law Center on Poverty and Homelessness (NLCHP), and Professor Sara Rankin, Associate Professor and Director of the Seattle University Homeless Rights Advocacy Project, for sharing their expertise, and their work to make sure the rights of people experiencing homelessness are protected.

A few follow-ups:

·      Endorse the “Housing Not Handcuffs” campaign, and be part of an active network of communities challenging laws that punish homelessness.

·      Learn more about the ongoing effort with Disability Rights CA to expand Martin v. Boise to apply to people living in their vehicles.

Check out these NLCHP resources Tristia highlighted in the webinar:

·      “Housing Not Handcuffs” report and litigation manual—lays out the various criminalization policies across the country and legal challenges to laws that punish homelessness.

·      “Tent City USA” report—principles, case studies, and model policies to guide a community in providing alternatives for people living outdoors in the absence of permanent housing solutions and challening criminalization.

·      “Protect Tenants, Prevent Homelessness” report—details how evictions are a direct cause of homelessness and promote policies like rent control, “Just Cause” eviction reform (a Housing Alliance legislative priority in 2019), and the right to legal counsel.

And, on behalf of the Housing Alliance, I’d like to wish everyone a restful, joyous, safe holiday season.
