Hello! There are 2 upcoming opportunities to comment about the City's affordable housing action strategy, and more specifically the ways it needs to explicitly address the history of racist housing policies, including redlining, exclusionary zoning, and
restrictive covenants.
Theresa already sent info on the first one which is Tues May 14 at 5 pm at City Council chambers. Councilmember Beale is bringing forward a resolution to City Council: "the establishment of racial and socioeconomic justice as a foundational element of
housing policy to address disparate impacts from historic housing and land use practices, and reduce displacement risk and gentrification by expanding housing choice and affordability throughout the community."
Then on
May 15th at 6 pm, the Planning Commission is having a public hearing to consider incorporating pieces of the Affordable Housing Action Strategy to the City's comprehensive plan (with a focus on zoning). More info is here:
www.cityoftacoma.org/2019amendments. It is really valuable for the Planning Commission to hear directly from residents. There is an informational meeting at 5 pm, and the hearing starts at 6. This is also in Council chambers.
