Background: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)  teaches screening tools for substance use and mental health that help detect behavioral health issues earlier and conduct brief interventions to help clients get assistance.   This is evidence-based approach that is endorsed by SAMHSA and HHS.  You don't have to be a licensed behavioral health professional to conduct SBIRT.  Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a great way to have a supportive, person-centered dialogue with anyone – and help the other person think through barriers and options to making a healthy change, in a non-judgmental way.  MI training is required by many health and human service agencies who receive funding in Pierce County.
