Updating - City Evaluated Properties for Use as Shelters & Meeting with Pamela Duncan, MDC & Dec. 1 by Maureen Howard (22 Oct 2019 03:27 UTC)

Colleagues,

City Manager Elizabeth Pauli offered us the list of properties the City of Tacoma has already evaluated for use as shelters.  I have requested a copy of that information and though it has to go through the Public Disclosure Request process, I should have it no later than next Monday.  I'm hoping the City speeds up the process.  Once I receive it, I'll let you know and will forward it to those of you interested.

I met today with Pamela Duncan, Executive Director of MDC (Metropolitan Development Council).  She said the Tacoma Ministerial Alliance is now a partner with MDC and Associated Ministries in the contract with the city.  She also said the partners are ready to begin convening the various members of the community as soon as the contract is signed.  I encouraged her and the others to come to a Friday morning TPC Coalition to End Homelessness meeting to both inform us of their planned work and to listen to us.  I assured her that we had a lot to say!

Although I had been arguing for a delay from the Dec. 1 implementation deadline, Theresa Power-Drutis says she thinks we - unsheltered people and their allies - can be ready with enough safe encampments and shelter options by that date.  Actually, Theresa wants everything in place by Nov. 25.  So, I'm deferring to her.

Theresa, Greg Walker and I are meeting with Linda Stewart, Director of Neighborhood and Community Services Thursday, Oct. 24 and will report back to you at Friday's Coalition meeting.

Thank you for your work,

Maureen

Invitation to attend the South Sound Summit by Gerrit Nyland (22 Oct 2019 15:32 UTC)
Reply to list

The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber has kindly offered the Coalition to End Homelessness complementary tickets to attend their all day November 13th South Sound Summit (10:30am-6pm).  They would love a large presence from the members of the Coalition, and I’m hoping we can deliver.  There will be a forum on homelessness we’ll need to be a major presence at, some great opportunities for building relationships and developing your skills, and we will have a table that will need staffing all day.

Let me know if you or someone from your organization can attend, and I’ll sign you up.

Full information on the summit is at https://www.southsoundsummit.com/

Again, do let me know if you can attend.

Thanks,

-Gerrit

If you mean the Freezing Night program run by the Puyallup Coalition to End Homelessness, it will operate the same as last year – November 1st through March 31st – meet at 6:30pm at the New Hope Center – 414 Spring St., Puyallup, WA 98372.

If you mean the extended capacity at the local shelters operated during Inclement Weather, that is only when temperatures drop below 32 degrees (or below 35 and raining or below 35 and high winds).  Inclement Weather is called by 3pm, and announced in a number of locations, including this listserv.

Vehicle parking at churches for the homeless by Joy Pratt-Stanford (22 Oct 2019 23:31 UTC)

Can anyone meet with me, to tell me how or who to contact in order for churches to allow parking in their lots overnight for the homeless sleeping in their cars.

We have churches in Gig Harbor/Key Peninsula area that are interested in allowing this but want to make sure they do it the correct way.

Thank you.
