Colleagues,

There is a lot I don't know but here are a few things I do know:

1.  Status of additional shelter beds in Tacoma - thanks to Tiegan Tidball, Neighborhood & Community Services:

Bethlehem Baptist Church received its permit

o   Still exploring for an operator

o   No start date for sheltering

Altheimer Memorial Church

o   Still in the permitting process

Location on 8th & MLK

o   Tacoma Emergency Micro-Shelter Site (TEMS)

Maureen's note:  I think Dec. 19 is the target opening date

Exploring temporary sheltering with FBOs

o   Will provide updates when more concrete

And from Pastor Gregory Christopher at Shiloh - they are one of the FBOs (Faith Based Organizations) and are exploring shelter for single men.

I did ask the Mayor and City Manager about re-opening the old shelter on Tacoma Ave. and the City Manager said they are looking into it.

2.  Pierce County Continuum of Care - Valeri Knight sent out the message last week - the 5 Year Strategic Plan with the state required Homeless/Housing Plan within it should go to the County Council Dec. 3 for approval and then to the Washington State Department of Commerce.

3.  Pierce County Budget - included new money for addressing homelessness.  This is the link to the summary of the 2020-2021 budget - if you haven't followed this, take a look.  I think you'll be pleased.  https://www.co.pierce.wa.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=4449

4.  If you use Facebook - these sites all post items of local interest.  Some you have to join.  Some only the site administrator can add material to.  None of them is a "news feed."  There are other statewide Facebook sites but these either focus on homelessness or include posts on homelessness locally.
Tacoma Pierce County Coalition to End Homelessness
Homeless Humans of Tacoma (Patti Ramos - includes her work in Thurston County)
     Tacoma Affordable Housing Advocates
     Tacoma Tenants Organizing Committee
I don't follow Twitter but maybe some of you do and can add key "tags?" or whatever they are called.  I have this awful feeling I might have to learn.  I know there are other social media options.  I'm claiming age and lack of staff as my defense.

5. From the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance -  I'll end with this from John Stovall, Member Organizer - all the links should work:

Have you ever received a 20-day "no-cause" notice to vacate your home? Do you know someone who has? The Washington Low Income Housing Alliance would love to connect with you and anyone who has firsthand experience of this harmful loophole in our tenant protections.

No-cause evictions are a serious problem in Washington for many reasons, including that they:

A) Directly force people out of their community and into housing instability and homelessness

B) Restrict renters' access to justice, bypassing the court system in which the renter could otherwise make an argument to keep their home, and

C) Often hide underlying discrimination or retaliation by the landlord.

We are asking for your help to share our Evicted without Cause web page with anyone who has directly experienced a no-cause eviction so they can share their experiences and get connected with our statewide advocacy effort to require a legitimate business reason to terminate one's tenancy. Please forward the link (www.evictedwithoutcause.com) widely via social media, newsletters, listservs, and even your website, and if you're a service provider, please share the form with any clients who have been directly impacted by this issue. As always, real stories by real people are what change lawmakers' minds.

Please contact me directly with any questions or thoughts!

Share my story of a 20-day "no-cause" eviction
Many thanks for your work,
Maureen
