Dear Neighbor,

We are writing to share an update on the Tacoma Emergency Micro-Shelters (TEMS) transition and the status of People’s Park.

On December 19, 2019 the TEMS site opened and 35 individuals encamped at People’s Park were transitioned to the site after being identified and enrolled with our service partners at Comprehensive Life Resources, Recovery Café and RISE.

To support the remaining individuals encamped at People’s Park, The City of Tacoma and Metro Parks are working with service providers, non-profits and faith-based organizations to make authorized, safe, and healthy shelter options available.  Through these efforts, authorized shelter sites are available.

The City is committed to addressing the significant health and safety issues present in unauthorized shelter sites, which impact adjacent residents, businesses and individuals at the sites.  As a result, a seventy-two (72) hour notice requiring transition to authorized shelters and the removal of abandoned property and unauthorized structures at People’s Park was issued to individuals at the park on Friday, January 3, 2020.

City parks, including People’s Park, are not authorized shelter sites.  Individuals utilizing People’s Park for overnight shelter must transition from the park to authorized shelters.

The City will assist with this transition through referrals to available sheltering, transportation and the storage of personal belongings.

Day use of City parks will be allowed only in accordance with the Park Code, including no walled structures.  In addition, parks throughout the city, including People’s Park, will be closed to all overnight camping in accordance with long-standing Park Code Regulations.

For more information about the status of the TEMS project, visit us online or call (253) 591-2047.

Sincerely,

Neighborhood and Community Services
