Sherri, if your client resides within the City of Tacoma, I encourage you and the client to seek advice/file a complaint with the city's Office of Equity and Human Rights.  Last year, the Council passed an ordinance prohibiting landlords from refusing to rent because of applicant's source of income.  This landlord's policy sounds like an attempt to end-run and evade that policy.

In the interim,  is there someone to whom you can write a company check who will take it to a bank and exchange it for a cashier's check that can then be given to the apartment management?

Hello-

We have a client who we have been working with. She came to us with a 14 day pay-or-vacate. As pare of her housing stability plan (HSP), she used the funds from her check to put towards late rent and Valeo cut a check for the remaining amount.

The apartment states they will not accept our company check, nor will they allow us to make a payment online. They state she is required to pay with cashiers check or money order. Valeo cannot do that, per our accounting policy.

Is there anything we can do? She has paid her portion and we are prepared with the remaining $1250. Help?
