Sharlene,

If the client follows all the proper steps under the RLTA and the landlord refuses to allow her to be removed from the lease, she can file a discrimination claim under the Fair Housing Laws.  If she needs additional information on this process, she can contact our Fair Housing Investigator or file a complaint with the Washington State Human Rights Commission.

Hopefully, this process goes smooth for your client and she will be able to move on with rebuilding her life smoothly.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you-

Yes!  RCW 59.18.575 allows a victim of DV, sexual assault, unlawful harassment, or stalking to break their lease within 90 days after an incident for their safety.  There are certain procedures that must be followed to use this get-out-of-lease card, though.  See our publication at https://www.washingtonlawhelp.org/resource/landlordtenant-issues-for-survivors-of-domest for more information and sample letters to use.

Good morning,

I need help with resources for a woman who is trying to.flee a dv situation. They are both on the lease and she wants off so she can leave and find her own place...

Is there a way she can get removed off a lease? No police reports because of retaliation from his family.

Thank you
