"The protesters were responding to a meeting at LeMay - America’s Car Museum, the site of a “business summit” organized by local organization Tacoma Safe, which a number of local public officials attended."
"Police spokeswoman Wendy Haddow said the incident occurred at 6:10 p.m., adding that the truck “went over a curb and struck a pedestrian, then sped southbound” on East D Street. The woman suffered a broken hip, and was transported to a local hospital."
No one inside at the summit or outside at the protest would have - or could have - predicted the bizarre actions of a malicious hit & run driver. Whatever political or social message the driver was trying to send is unclear to me. My heart goes out to the person who was injured so horribly and the friends who witnessed the attack. I hope healing for the victim and consequences for the perpetrator are both rapid.
NOTE: There is already a baiter/hater comment inserted below the News Tribune story. The comment received a calm, clear response (thank you janthiessen). Hope we can keep the dialogue alive and civil. Community engagement around "shelter for all" is not always easy, but it is the best chance we have of making progress.
