FYI for those of you with HOUSED clients:  Low-income households (150% FPL) who are particularly susceptible to heat and/or smoke may be able to get a portable air conditioner or air purifier through LIHEAP this year, if they haven’t already received energy assistance since 10/1/21.  MDC and Pierce County Human Services administer LIHEAP locally.

Subject: [ESP] Portable Air Conditioning Unit available through LIHEAP

This info came to me through the Developmental Disabilities Administration, but it is relevant for any limited income person who needs access to air conditioning for air quality during smoky periods in our region or who is susceptible to health impacts from high temperatures. Eligibility is through the LIHEAP program, not a health program, and not just for people with developmental disabilities.

If you have clients vulnerable in high heat/poor air quality conditions, the time to work to get this is now.

Portable Air Conditioning Units

DDA clients living in an in-home setting may be able to obtain a portable air conditioning unit through the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

  • There is a limit of one AC unit per household.
  • Air purifiers are also available for clients living in areas that are historically known to be impacted by smoke from wildfires.

You are encouraged to submit your request as soon as possible, before the weather gets hot and air conditioners are in high demand.

The AC unit will be delivered to your home, but it will not include installation.
