Winthrop Apartments fire by Andrea Kilgore (22 May 2023 18:12 UTC)

    Hello everyone,

My agency has at least 3 different referrals for people who were displaced by the fire at Winthrop Apartments.  Some of these tenants are very confused and do not understand what is going on.  We are trying to help them figure out the plan.  Here is the situation:

They are not technically homeless, because they were instructed to continue paying rent on the units even though they are not able to reside there until the repairs are doneThey were offered a chance to stay in motels paid by Red Cross.  Some people passed initially, now they have no where to go and no one will pay for the motels anymore.  They are asking us to find them temporary places to stay. There is a rumor that the repairs might take 1-12 months.  None of them can afford to continue paying rent on a unit where they are not residing, but they also have no where else to go.  Most of them were previously homeless and worked really hard to get into Winthrop, so they don’t want to give up the apartment if there is a chance they can move back in.  All of them report that the management and Tacoma Housing Authority do not answer the phone or do not return their calls to answer their questions.  They are asking us to do it for them, but our experience is that they won’t talk to us either.

Anyone know a good contact for this situation?  Then I can direct my staff to call them.

    Thank you,

I recommend you physically go in and speak with someone there. I just last week had to do the same.

    Hi Coalition!

We have updated the City Authorized Emergency Shelter Site with the Safe Parking Checklist.  You can find it here, under the Safe Parking header at the bottom of the page.  I have also attached the flyer to this email for reference, but any updates to the document will be reflected on the page.  If we make any major changes, we will update you all in future meetings.

As always, if you have any questions or need clarification, please reach out to Matthew or me directly.
