Subject: WE NEED YOUR HELP! GRIT 2.0 guaranteed income demonstration project!

Good morning!

I am reaching out to share information about the second iteration of Tacoma’s guaranteed income demonstration project, Growing Resilience in Tacoma (GRIT 2.0) and to request your assistance in helping to strengthen families in the Tacoma area. My team at United Way of Pierce County is working in partnership with the WA State DSHS/ESA, the City of Tacoma, and Pierce County to implement this project. We are getting ready to open the application in a couple weeks and are looking for community partners to help spread the word with qualified households.

Will you join us?

In 2022, GRIT served 110 ALICE families from some of the highest-need zip codes in Tacoma to provide unrestricted, unconditional cash gifts of $500/month for 13 months. For GRIT 2.0, 175 participants will receive $500 a month for 12 months as a supplement to their income and public benefits. Qualified applicants must:

  1. Live in one of the following zip codes: 98404, 98405, 98408, 98409, 98418, 98444, or 98445
  2. Be a single-head-of-household with child(ren) under 18 (or 21 and under if the child is disabled)
  3. Meet United Way’s ALICE criteria (Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, while Employed) with an income between 100% - 200% FPL (federal poverty level)

In addition to the above requirements, we are also reaching out to community partners in hopes of engaging participants who both meet the overall criteria, and also are:

Enrolled in school, college, technical, or workforce training programs

Are involved in and/or have immediate family members impacted by the justice system

The application will be open for a limited time, which is why we are communicating ahead of the application opening to ensure equitable access by working with our community partners to help spread the word.

Our goal is to provide financial support and demonstrate that a relatively modest cash investment can improve economic stability, housing security, health and well-being, and reduce poverty in our community.

We will be hosting a series of GRIT 2.0 information sessions to share more specific program information and answer any questions you may have. Please register for one of the sessions. If you are unable to make one of the sessions, please let me know if you would like a link to the recording.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

In partnership,

Shawn
