Love Abounds Here supporter,
The newest Yelm City Councilor, Trevor Palmer, made a public statement on February 6th that he believes "the criteria has been met. That this is more of a vagrancy issue, mental health issue, and addiction issue not homeless. That the committee isn't serving its intended purpose anymore." He would like to get rid of it entirely.
I wish I could say that I was surprised by this move. To combat this naivety, I plan on gearing up for the February 27th Yelm City Council meeting with public comment or at minimum email statements why the committee should stay in existence. Can you help me with this mission?
Here is a draft of the email and the necessary addresses to send your message:
Support for Yelm Homelessness Committee
Homelessness Committee History: On March 28, 2023, Yelm City Council voted to create the Yelm Homelessness Committee which continued the work from the 2019 Homelessness Taskforce recommendations. The homelessness committee identifies areas where the city can use its resources to coordinate or support services for the homeless population in Yelm. On June 13, 2023, the appointments were confirmed for the members. Five members serving four-year terms. Those holding the position include city council members, specialists in addiction and mental health issues, representatives from nonprofits that aid homeless individuals, representatives from organizations that create or sustain low-income housing, and Yelm area residents.
Thank you for your continued support. We are here if you have questions.
