Here are the key points from our 2022 winter weather ED visits and hypothermia events. Please reach out if you have any questions!
- There were 0 CO poisoning related ED visits among individuals experiencing homelessness in Pierce County in 2022.
- There were 229 ED cold-related visits among individuals experiencing homelessness in Pierce County in 2022. The majority came from individuals living in 98405 (n=87, 38%).
- There were 57 ED visits related to burns from tent fires/stoves among individuals experiencing homelessness in Pierce County in 2022. The majority came from individuals living in 98405
(n=15, 26%).
- For both cold-related visits and visits related to burns from tent fires/stoves, the majority of visits were for men, and/or those aged 18-64.
- From 2009 to 2022, there 55 deaths listed as hypothermia. 7 were listed as homeless. 28 of these were labelled as “climate related.”
- Below is a breakdown of the deaths based on location.
- Most occurred in January.

Hello everyone,
The weather has been edging closer to seasonal normes. This week we have seen some low temps as well as wind and flood advisories. In preparation for the possible upcoming events, it was agreed to open a new tread for ease of access and availability.
We are also posting all emails to the inclement weather listserve at www.pchomeless.org. Please let me know if you are receiving double postings.

Shelters: Please update your availability at www.pchomeless.org. After one week the status may be changed to call for availability. During weather events an up to date number of available would be very helpful and appreciated if possible.
On hypothermia kits. Who feels that it would be helpful and needed to have and at what point in outreach. can they be effectively given during an inclement event? feedback is appreciated. Please reply all. We can all do better by learning from each other.
