Linda Stewart confirmed it is be a two week notice and the Homeless Outreach Team is providing support.  I've asked how many beds are available.

If we have until the 10th, I can think of two encampments they can move to. As much as is possible, we don’t want people scattered as we are trying to fix the problem.

I agree - the notice clearly says June 10 but it also says 72 hour notice.

Maybe Jeffrey needs to move from garbage bag man to phone man and figure out how to get phones out!

That date clearly says June 10.

It seems we should confirm how many people are at the site and that there are shelter options for all of them.

I come back to the conversation this morning with James and Jenny - especially Jenny noting that people didn’t have phones so they were going back to reconnect with people in person… Even though I think she made that comment about 34th and Pacific, it is a good illustration of how chasing people from one site to another impedes helping them. It just heaps on more trauma.

Colleagues,
I'm hoping some of you are reading emails over this long week-end.  Food Not Bombs reached out to me for help.  I've sent the email below to the City Attorney, forwarded it with a cover message to NCS, and sent it to our legal "team" - Tristia, Jennifer Ammons, Kasey and Laurie.  I've given the Mayor a heads up and Gerrit is reaching out to Port Commission Kristin Ang.

So - what do you think we can/should do?  Since it is clearly a 72 hour notice, I'm guessing the sweep is Tuesday, June 1 -  either someone reversed the date or June 10 is the date that the site itself will have been cleaned up.

I'll find Jennifer Ammons emails from I think Christmas 2019 when I worked with Food Not Bombs on an earlier sweep of the 509.

I'll watch for messages.

Thanks everyone,
Maureen

Good evening Bill,
I hope you are reading emails over the holiday.

We've just received a copy of the notice given to people experiencing homelessness at the 509 encampment.   I know it is coming from the Port of Tacoma but it cites Tacoma Municipal Code as the authority so I'm coming to you.

We are still under CDC guidelines.  And the State Eviction moratorium is still in effect and I believe it also covers encampments.  Is this notice legal?

Food Not Bombs says there are 30-50 folks living there.  I know that Comprehensive Life Resources went out recently.  We've had some of our Safe Sites for All members at the site.

I'll send a copy of this message to Linda Stewart and key NCS staff and see if they have anyone helping folks relocate.

It looks like we have more time than usual unless someone wrote the sweep date backwards?  Maybe you could confirm the date?  If it is Tuesday, 6/01 then this is just wrong.   No one in the Coalition knew about this - NCS staff told us it was coming but had no date.  There are no services over the week-end and through Monday.  If it is as written 6/10, then we have time to try to sort this out.

I don't know if Tacoma Police Department carries out a Port of Tacoma sweep?    Plus I think this is partly Puyallup Tribal land so perhaps the Tribal Police are involved?

Thanks for your help,
Maureen
