The City started its search for a publicly owned site for a low barrier camping site earlier this year, largely in response to the need to move people from the 8th and Yakima area. In April, NCS staff told City Council members that the temporary hygiene station and porta potty at 8th and Yakima may be able to shift to a new low barrier site at S. 69th and Proctor within a month.
Flash forward and there is still no prospect of a low barrier site anywhere, the 69th and Proctor site became the target site to move micro-shelters from 60th and McKinley and will add at most 20 additional micro-shelters when it opens later this month or in October. And now the City has determined a way to move people during the 4th or 5th surge of COVID-19.
There is no doubt that the situation at 8th and Yakima needs cleaned up and people offered appropriate shelter in other locations. That is not going to happen. Maybe we should provide the addresses of City Council members to those staying at 8th and Yakima as suggested spaces where they could move next?Rob Huff
