So then “daytime” shelter is nice, but OVERNIGHT is critically important, right?

I know we all have different weather sources we look to, but meteorologist Cliff Mass always provides a useful narrative of the coming weather. His blog is at https://cliffmass.blogspot.com/ . Of note in his most recent entry is this sentence, speaking of the coming cold: “Cold enough to kill those attempting to live outside without shelter--making it mandatory to get all homeless inside no later than Saturday.”

Subject: Extreme Weather Response - Maureen's Thoughts for Today's Steering Committee Meeting - 12/23/21 8am

Good morning,

In case I can't make the 2pm meeting, here are my morning thoughts:  .Folks new to this distribution - go to pchomeless.org for Zoom info.

We - the Coalition - follows the framework I proposed yesterday and we invite folks to take certain tasks.  There are many ways to organize this - here's my brain's morning schematic:.

1.Communication - we will rely on local governments for accurate and timely information and will communicate it via this listserv, our Coalition website and our Coalition Facebook page.   We will also use existing targeted listservs.  This may mean. you will receive the same information more than once.  The local governments and DEMs may also communicate directly with us by using this listserv.

Coalition website, Facebook page, - Rob and Gerrit

Coalition listserv, targeted listservs - Maureen with Gerrit and Rob as back-up

Expanded social media, contact with activists and volunteers - Megan Capes

Other?

2.Coordination of Information and Activity- Pierce County Human Services and Dept of Emergency Management take the lead.  We work with them   notify them of our needs and resources including access to our own networks. We're looking to fill gaps quickly and safely.

Providers, volunteers, activists   - send info directly to Delmar Algee, Jeff Rodgers, and cc Gerrit, Rob, Maureen.

Tasks?  I'm not sure but Sally Perkins offered to help.  She's good at organizing information.  Among other things.

3.Services -we focus on six areas:  What do we know that Delmar, Jeff, Gerrit, Wyatt and Ellen need to know?  What do they know that we need to know?

Everyone needs to keep Delmar Algee and Jeff Rodgers informed of the operational status of all programs and services especially new faith-based, government, and volunteer programs and changes to existing programs and services. It is important that we have accurate points of contact and contact information - including week-end and after-hours telephone numbers. It would be good if we can get By-name lists wherever possible - this can help people with other resources.  It can also help us know who is still outside.

That's it...

I did reach out to leadership - Jody Ferguson and Amy Gillespie from PC DEM and Heather Moss and John Barbee from PC Human Services to say thanks - that at least for me, having Delmar, Jeff, Gerrit, Wyatt, and Ellen brief us yesterday, listen to us, answer our questions, made me believe we had the promise of something good - that their work meant we in the Coalition could work toward our strengths.  That just maybe we can keep people alive.

I sent an FYI copy to CM Mello, Chair Young, County Exec Dammeier.

I'll watch emails and texts and will try to make the 2pm Steering Committee meeting.

Take care all,

Maureen
